Why are our COVID-19 numbers so embarrassingly high?

Why are American COVID-19 numbers so embarrassingly high? And what can we do about it?

13,495,260 cases of COVID-19* were reported worldwide on July 14th. With 3,547,413 cases, the US reported more cases by a landslide than any other country. You may say some countries wildly under-report their numbers. For example, China’s report of only 83,611 cases seems ridiculously low. But, the sad truth is our out-of-control COVID-19 numbers highlight America’s healthcare system was already in a crisis long before this pandemic. According to the New York Times, America has the most expensive, least effective healthcare system in the world. And, it's one reason why we are struggling so much with this epidemic.

Here’s the silver lining: the COVID-19 pandemic outright demands America finally fixes its healthcare system.
I offer two explanations on why the COVID-19 epidemic is forcing us to change our broken system. Although drastically different in style, both offer hope. First is a New York Times article from “The America We Need” series on emerging from this crisis with a fair, resilient society.

In contrast, my video on this issue incorporates Burning Man’s 10 Principles. It uses them as a lens to explain why America has a healthcare crisis and how we can heal it. I suggest that you first watch my video linked below, as it’s a much gentler introduction to the very disturbing, brutal facts.

Lastly, COVID-19 demonstrates lifestyle medicine, changing our behavior, is the only method to stop the spread of COVID-19. On top of washing your hands, wearing a mask, and maintaining social distance, now more than ever is the time to practice self-care. Instead of relying on medications or medical procedures, get creative. Go out of your comfort zone. Change your habits to enhance your own health as well as stop the spread of COVID-19.
